But, Still

But still, the dawn breaks,

Drips of breath lay on window panes

And barks ring out from next door.

But still, daffodils spring up,

The lawn is cut and prepared for sun

And strolls lead on to walks.

But still, I hit play,

Swing my hands to flash dances

And get ready like before.

But still, I face the faces,

Remind myself what month it is

And plan for big birthdays.

But still, I pause, remember,

You are not here.

02

In Essence

The wind of silence

Can still lift feathers

As leaves gather together

For a last-gasp collage.

A yellow backpack grazes

The pavement with toes

Tipping in last year's shoes.

Seagulls prowl the riverbed.

Strangers take foolish steps.

Ideas for something get lost

In appearing puddles.

I did not see the rain.

I did not hear a sound.

Autumn does that.

Magnets

We find each other in our night times.

It’s easy to feel dreamy around you,

When you pull me closer.

The set is off-book.

Party people are kicking.

Tequila shots slip to the floor.

We sit silently.

Me on your lap.

Your finger outlines my lips.

It’s easy to feel dreamy around you

When you kiss like that.

You pull away for a moment,

Whispering in my ear.

It’s between us only,

This night and time.
